Chavara Achan


Blessed Kuriakose Elias Chavara was born on 10th February 1805. According to the local custom the infant was baptized on 15th February 1805.


He was ordained priest on 29th November, 1829


He joined Malpan Thomas Porukara and Malpan Thomas Palackal when they were planning to found a congregation. In 1830 he went to Mannanam to direct the construction of the first house of the congregation of which the foundation stone was laid on 11th May, 1831


Fr. Kuriakose Elias Chavara landed in Koonammav on 1864, Became Prior of Koonammavu St. Philomenas Church Monastery, Later He was made Vicar General of Verapolly Archdiocese. Fr. Kuriakose Elias Chavara, died on January 3, 1871, aged 66, at Koonammavu St. Philomenas Church Monastery and he was buried with Honor in St. Philomina's Church, Koonanmavu.


In 1955, Mar Mathew Kavukattu, arch-bishop of Changanacherry, received instructions from Rome to start diocese-level procedure towards the canonisation. On April 7, 1984, Pope John Paul II approved the Servant of God, Kuriakose Elias Chavara's practice of heroic virtues and declared him "Venerable".


Venerable Kuriakose Elias Chavara was beatified at Kottayam on February 8, 1986, by st.Pope John Paul II, in the course of a papal visit to India.


On 3 April 2014, Pope Francis authorised the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to promulgate the decrees concerning the miracle attributed to Kuriakose Elias' intercession. This confirms Pope's approval of Kuriakose Elias' canonisation. On June 12, 2014, the Pope decreed that Blessed Kuriakose Elias be inscribed in the roll call of Saints on 23 November 2014.
